1,380 get police medal, most for action in J&K

The government today announced a total of 1,380 medals for police personnel on the occasion of Independence Day, among them 628 for gallantry and 750 for distinguished and meritorious services.

The highest President’s Police Medal for Gallantry (PPMG) has been awarded to J&K Police Sub-Inspector Amardeep Parihar and late CRPF Head Constable Kale Sunil Dattatraya (posthumously) for their contribution in J&K.

During an encounter in Baramulla on August 20, 2019, Amardeep had shown “indomitable courage while evacuating injured and other civilians outside the target house”. Dattatraya lost his life during a terror attack on June 23, 2020, in Pulwama when two militants were neutralised.

The Police Medal for Gallantry has been bestowed upon 628 security and police personnel, of whom maximum 398 are being awarded for their gallant action in J&K, followed by 155 for courageous action in areas affected by left wing extremism and 27 for actions in the North-East.

Among those named for gallantry awards, maximum 256 are from J&K Police, 151 CRPF, 23 ITBP and 67 Odisha Police, 25 Maharashtra and 20 from Chhattisgarh and the remaining from other states/UTs and CAPFs.

There are 88 police personnel who have been named to receive President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service and 662 for Police Medal for Meritorious Service.
