Ujjwal Mehta, a student of Apollo Public School in Patiala, has topped the state in the JEE (Main), the result of which was declared by the National Testing Agency (NTA) late Friday evening. The examination for BE/BTech was conducted by the NTA between January 7 and 9 this year across 233 cities in India.

Ujjwal, who hails from Jalandhar, started his preparation for the exams at an institute in Patiala two years ago.

Disclosing his mantra for success, the state topper said frequent tests of full syllabus before the exams helped him top the state in the most cutting-edge competitive exam.

Ujjwal, talking to The Tribune, said, “The repeated full syllabus tests at the end of my preparation helped me in revision. I would give two full syllabus tests in a day while others used to give only one.”

He said he focused on his mistakes and made sure that whatever mistakes were made in the tests were not repeated again. “Whenever I would stress out, I would run to the nearest multiplex to get relaxed. I am fond of movies,” he said.

He said movie ‘Super 30’, based on the life of mathematician Anand Kumar, had also inspired him to study more to crack the exam. Apart from this, he used to play badminton in the hostel.

Ujjwal, who started living in hostel two years ago, said his parents, who live in Jalandhar, hardly came to meet him during his preparation. He said, “They used to come once or twice a year to meet me. They didn’t want my studies to get disturbed even for a minute. They didn’t meet me even on the New Year’s Eve.”
