New Delhi, January 11

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday spoke to the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken to discuss the maritime security challenges, especially the Red Sea region, which has doubled shipping costs and time.

“A good discussion this evening with my friend,” posted Jaishankar on X, adding that he appreciated Blinken’s insights on the ongoing situation in West Asia, including Gaza.

The attacks by the Houthis of Yemen on ships owned by Israeli billionaires or those entering the Red Sea have led to some of the world’s major shipping giants opting not to use the Suez Canal. Ships from Europe to Asia are making a long detour around the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa. This has escalated transportation and insurance costs, leading to fear about imported inflation in many countries.

“Exchanged perspectives on developments pertaining to the Ukraine conflict. Looking forward to realising our extensive cooperation agenda for 2024,” he further posted.

Blinken is on an extensive trip to West Asia as he seeks to lower the intensity of the Israeli military assault on Gaza as also save the Netanyahu government from an adverse judgment from the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
