Hindi play focuses on violence in society

Chandigarh, January 20

The Alfaaz Theatre Group staged a classic Hindi play, ‘Balee- The Sacrifice’, during the ongoing Winter Theatre Festival, organised by the Punjab Sangeet Natak Akademi, at Randhawa Auditorium here today.

Written by playwright thespian Girish Karnad in Kannada as ‘Hittina Hunja’, the play was adapted for stage by Marathi director Suhas Suryavanshi , who also played the lead role as the king. The play, set up in centuries old royal splendor, brings into focus the issues still relevant in society, including power and violence.

The play had four characters which represented the segments of society — the king, queen mother, queen and a mahout.

Neena Suryavanshi played the queen mother, Mandeep Kaur the queen, Suhas Suryvanshi the king and Vipin Kumar the mahout. Senior theatre artiste Jaswant Daman honoured them all.

Satirical comedy

A satirical comedy play, ‘Filmish’, written by Shivam Dhall, was staged by the Satvik Art Society at Tagore Theatre. It was directed by Shivam and Raja Subramaniyam.
