Palampur, April 19

Neha Verma (21), the youngest panchayat pradhan of the state, was attacked by some miscreants at her native Tambar village when she was on her way to office. She sustained serious injuries on the neck and was referred to the Palampur Civil Hospital for CT-scan.

Neha had been under threat by some anti-social elements for the past one year since she was elected the panchayat pradhan, forfeiting deposits of all candidates. Villagers said in the past year, she had removed dozens of fake BPL, IRDP and Antyodaya beneficiaries from panchayat records who were availing illegal benefits for the past 10 to 15 years. She had also enforced a ban on the sale and use of liquor in public places like village shops, forests and roadside.

Baijnath DSP BD Bhatia said the police had registered a case under Sections 452, 323 and 506 of the IPC. However, no arrests have been made.
