War memorial to be built at Rs 70 lakh: Himachal CM

The Kargil War was an example of extraordinary bravery of the Army and Vijay Diwas was celebrated to mark the “unwavering patriotism, extraordinary bravery and determination of our soldiers”, said Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur here today.

Thakur, addressing the 23rd state-level Kargil Vijay Diwas function, said the war was fought valiantly in extreme weather conditions to defend the borders. He added that the country would always remain indebted to the soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice.

He said 23 years ago, Pakistani soldiers and intruders infiltrated Indian peaks. He added that then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee warned Pakistan that, “The world knows about India’s preference for peace but it will now witness the Indian military might to protect peace and borders.”

The Chief Minister said of total 527 soldiers martyred during the Kargil War, 52 were from Himachal.

He earlier paid tributes to the martyred soldiers at the Martyrs Mridul Park. He announced that a war memorial would be built at a cost of Rs 70 lakh.

He also inaugurated and laid foundation stone of four projects worth Rs 54 crore. He opened a Model Career Centre at Hamirpur and laid the foundation stone of a Rs 6.74 crore indoor stadium at Didwin Tikkar, a Rs 30 crore water supply scheme for Chowki, Chabot and Amroh from the Beas and a Rs 13 crore lift water supply scheme for Dugha, Panjali, Kallar and Purohitam in the Hamirpur constituency.

MLAs Narender Thakur and Kamlesh Kumari, former MLA Ram Rattan Sharma, coordinator of the Kaushal Vikas Nigam Naveen Sharma, chairman of Kangra Agriculture Bank Kamal Nayan were also present.
