Dharamsala, January 23

Women have stopped tourists, going to Billing from Bir, carrying alcohol in their vehicles. Eight members of the local Mahila Mandal of Bir carried out the checking of vehicles going to Billing.

They said they had taken the action as two youths were killed and three injured when they were coming down from Billing a few days ago. They met with an accident because they were drunk. The women also confiscated some bottles of beer being carried by tourists.

Sources here said the locals had been complaining to the administration that some tourists carried liquor and beer to Billing. It was dangerous to drive down from Billing to Bir and in many cases, it resulted in accidents. Then administration did not act. The women took the matter in their hands and started a search of vehicles.

BiSDM, Baijnath, Chavi Nanta said the youth, from whose car bottles of beer were recovered, were let off with a warning. — TNS
