Mandi, September 14

The rise in vegetable prices amid the Covid pandemic is affecting low-income households in Mandi district.

Potato, which generally costs Rs 20 to Rs 30 per kg round the year, is being sold for Rs 50 these days. Similarly, tomato prices have gone up to Rs 80 per kg.

Residents have demanded the Mandi district administration to look into the matter.

Seema Sharma, a resident, says, “The rise in vegetable prices has affected my budget. Vegetables like peas, potato, cauliflower and capsicum are being sold at high prices.” Vegetable vendors say vegetable rates have been raised due to irregular supply from Punjab.

Kuldeep Singh, a vendor, says, “We expect that the vegetable supply from Punjab will be resumed properly in the next few days. It will help bring down prices.”
