Shimla, March 7

In an initiative to facilitate the students as well as the people of the state’s capital, Shimla Municipal Corporation (SMC) is set to establish digital libraries across the town.

For this, the corporation has directed all the councillors to find a suitable place in their respective wards. The councillors have also been directed to ensure that the place for establishing the digital libraries is easily accessible by the students.

The proposal of establishing digital libraries was mentioned in the Budget for the financial year 2024-25 which was announced by SMC Mayor Surinder Chauhan on February 15. According to the Budget, the corporation will establish these as per the availability of land.

Chauhan said that the corporation plans to establish digital libraries in each ward for which the corporation has sought proposals from the councillors. “The work for the establishment of these libraries will start soon after the proposals are received from the councillors,” he said.

“With the availability of these digital libraries, students will be greatly benefitted” he added.

He said that several new buildings will also be constructed for establishing the libraries for which the corporation will also seek funds from the state as well as the Union Government. Chauhan said that the proposals for the funds will be sent to the government after assessing the report of total expenditure that will be incurred in establishing the libraries.
