Shimla, May 1

The oxygen plant at Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital (DDUH), Shimla, has become functional. It was inaugurated by Urban Development Minister Suresh Bhardwaj here today.

The plant was sanctioned last year following a major spike in Covid cases. “The requirement of oxygen to fight the second wave is huge. The Centre had allotted five oxygen plants for the state. We have made the DDU plant functional,” said Bhardwaj.

DDU Medical Superintendent Dr Ravinder Mokta said the plant would help them meet nearly one third of the hospital’s demand when all 125 Covid beds were occupied. “The plant will provide us a huge relief,” said Dr Mokta.

The hospital fetched oxygen from Mandi and Baddi through trucks. With the plant becoming functional, the hospital’s reliance on cylinders will decrease significantly. Dr Mokta further said the plant would produce 300 litre oxygen per minute and 4.32 lakh litres per day.
