PM Narendra Modi arrives in Dharamsala today, CM reviews preparations

A day ahead of the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Himachal Police today cordoned off the entire Civil Lines area of the city. Barricades were put up on both sides of the Civil Lines road, leaving enough space for BJP workers to stand and watch the Prime Minister’s roadshow.

The BJP workers, who would participate in the roadshow, would have to undergo security screening. The Prime Minister would arrive here tomorrow to preside over the two-day conclave of Chief Secretaries being organised by the NITI Aayog.

Security officials held a rehearsal for tomorrow’s roadshow in Dharamsala. The Himachal Police circulated a traffic plan for June 16 and 17 during the Prime Minister’s stay in the city. No vehicular movement would be allowed from the Martyrs Park to the Circuit House through the Cheelgari area. The road from the Martyrs Park to the HPCA international cricket stadium, where the conference of the Chief Secretaries is to be held, would also be closed for general traffic. Local residents staying along restricted roads had been issued permits and had been directed not to park their vehicles along roadside.

Besides, the movement of students to Dharamsala Government College, Central University of Himachal Pradesh campus and B.Ed College would also be restricted. The activities at the Sports Authorities of India (SAI) synthetic track are suspended for the past more than a week due to the President’s visit and now for the Prime Minister.

Vehicles coming to Dharamsala from Gaggal would be diverted from Chataru to the Sheela Chowk road while vehicles coming from Kangra and going towards Pathankot would be diverted to the Chambi-Chari-Gharoh and Dharamsala bus stand road.

For BJP workers coming to participate in the rally, parking places have been created on the Sheela road, near D Polo Hotel, Zorawar Stadium, Dari ground and on roadsides at various places in the city. The local administration has arranged a shuttle bus service to transport BJP workers for the Prime Minister’s roadshow.

The movement of heavy vehicles would be restricted in the city on June 16 and 17 due to the movement of VVIPs. Sources said that the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) had advised the local authorities to make proper arrangements so that common people face minimum inconvenience during Modi’s visit. The PMO had even advised the authorities against the roadshow, which had been planned on the insistence of the state BJP. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur arrived here today to oversee the arrangements for the roadshow.
