One-day biodiversity workshop at Kinnaur

A one-day workshop was organised for biodiversity conservation at Nigulsari in Kinnaur district.

Dr SK Kapta, a biodiversity expert of JICA Forestry Project, said the project and the Forest Department planted pine trees on 105 hectares in Kinnaur district. This proved that excellent work was being done for the conservation of biodiversity in the district, he added.

He said the project was playing an important role in the area, adding that the JICA Forestry Project was distributing saplings to parts of Kinnaur where pine nuts were planted.

He informed the self-help groups (SHGs) present at the programme about the proper conservation and promotion of biodiversity. A total of 22 rural forest development committees were formed in forest areas of Bhavanagar, Nichar, Katgaon, Muling and Pooh in Kinnaur Forest Division.

Through these committees, the project was running programmes for plantation, biodiversity management and rural infrastructure improvement, he said.

During the workshop, CM Sharma, a retired DFO, provided information about the programmes being run through the project. Subject matter expert Reena Sharma from PMU, Shimla, informed the gathering about the various schemes related to the SHGs.

The SHGs were informed about ways to further improve their livelihood through handloom, food processing, vermicompost preparation, sewing, cutting, weaving and pickle making.

Subject matter expert Radhika, FTU coordinator Priyanka Negi, and incharges of all four forest ranges were among those present at the event.
