Mandi, July 31

Old trees grown alongside college road in the town are a serious threat to commuters. Recently, a landslide occurred near Vishwakarma chowk, which forced the local administration to stop traffic movement on the road for hours.

Area residents say that around 1-km stretch of the college road is vulnerable as an old tree can come crashing down on the road during the rainy season, which could be disastrous to the commuters. There is an urgent need to chop these old trees to avoid any untoward incident.

Birbal Sharma, a local resident, said, “Travelling on this road has become a risky affair. On this route from Vishwakarma Chowk to the water well, there are many trees on the hillside which have bent. Shops have been built upstairs and downstairs, but these trees are hanging in the middle. Danger of these trees falling during the rainy season always lurks because the hill adjoining Vishwakarma Chowk is sinking continuously.”

“This road connects Mandi town to Ramnagar and Sundernagar. Being a one-way passage, all vehicles enter the city through this route. It is a busy road of the town and there is movement of people and vehicles all the time,” he added.

Area residents Dharmender Sharma, Devender Kumar and Ramesh said there was an urgent need to remove these old trees from the area to avoid any untoward incident.

“We urge the Mandi Municipal Corporation authorities to look into the matter on priority in view of public safety. Requests had been made to the authorities concerned but to no avail,” they said.
