Shimla, September 14

Thousands of people bid a tearful adieu to martyr Attar Singh Rana at his native village Dhar Chandna in Kupvi tehsil of Shimla district today. The 26-year-old Punjab Regiment soldier attained martyrdom on the China border in Arunachal Pradesh on September 10. “We have sacrificed our son for the country. We are proud of him,” said his parents. Rana is survived by his parents, three brothers and two sisters. “Scores of people from nearby villages and panchayats turned up for the cremation,” said panchayat pradhan Padam Dev Sharma.

Local MLA Balbir Verma said the government had announced Rs 5 lakh for the bereaved family. — TNS
