Solan, January 17

A Tempo Trax driver, Kahn Singh (60), was killed on the spot while two injured excavator operators died on the way to hospital in Sirmaur district today. The excavator operators were digging the hill to widen the Shillai-Gumma section of the national highway No. 707 when they were hit by boulders falling from a hill at Meenas village around 10.50 am today. Another excavator operator was also injured in the incident.

Reckless digging of the hill reportedly led to the mishap, as a large chunk of debris comprising big boulders fell on the workers working at the site. They were dragged several metres below the road along with the debris.

The staff of a private company engaged in widening the highway were taking two injured excavator operators Ashok Kumar and Jitender to the nearest hospital at Chopal but they died on the way.

Ashok Kumar hails from Bengaluru while Jitender was a resident of Bhilwara in Rajasthan. Kahn Singh had parked his vehicle about 100 m from the accident site and was walking on the road when he was hit by huge boulders and killed. He was en route to Vikasnagar in Uttarakhand from Atahal.

Excavator operator Irshad was also injured. Shillai SDM Suresh Kumar rushed to the spot to oversee relief and rescue operations. He announced an immediate relief of Rs 10,000 to the kin of Kahn Singh. A case under Sections 336 and 304-A for causing death due to negligence has been registered and a probe is underway.
