Himachal cancels Class 12 exams, extends corona curfew till June 14

The Himachal government on Saturday extended the corona curfew in the state till June 14 and decided to cancel the Class 12 Himachal Board of School Education examinations.

The decision was taken by the Cabinet at its meeting chaired by Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur. The Cabinet meeting which was scheduled to be held today morning was postponed due to the demise of BJP legislator Narinder Bragta as the Chief Minister rushed to Chandigarh on hearing the news.

It was only once he returned from Chandigarh and the party office here that the brief meeting of the Cabinet was held only to discuss the two emergent issues of holding of class 12 exams and extending corona curfew.

Even though there has been an appreciable decline in the number of covid cases, based on the feedback from various quarters, the government decided to continue with the corona curfew till 6 am on June 14 with all the existing restrictions. As such public transport will remain suspended and all educational institutions will remain closed. A restriction of 20 persons at any social gartering, including marriages and funeral will also remain enforced.

“The Cabinet decided to cancel Class 12 examinations 2020-21 in line with Government of India decision. It decided that the HP Board of School Education would devise a formula for calculating the awards of the students keeping in view the formula being devised by the CBSE and declared the final results accordingly,” Education Minister Govind Thakur said.

It was also decided that in case some students are not satisfied with their results, they would be allowed to appear in a special examination to be conducted once the situation is conducive for conduct of the examination.

The Cabinet also decided that telephonic consultation be ensured for Covid-19 patients released from hospitals for home recovery. It was also decided that the Health department should explore more options for procurement of vaccines directly from the vaccine producers. 

Earlier, the Cabinet passed a resolution mourning the sad demise of Chief Whip and MLA from Jubbal-Kotkhai Vidhan Sabha area of Shimla district Narinder Bragta. The Cabinet appreciated the contributions of Bragta, particularly in development of horticulture sector in the state. Two-minute silence was also observed by the Cabinet as a mark of respect to the departed leader.
