Mandi, April 19

Anuradha Rana, chairperson of Zila Parishad, Lahaul and Spiti, has urged Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar to constitute a new forest rights committee for the tribal district to address the issues of people related to forests.

She alleged that the current committee was constituted in January against the recommendation of Zila Parishad authorities. In this committee, the representation of the people of Lahaul tehsil was ignored, which has the largest population as compared to other tehsils of the district, she said.

Rana said, “The Forest Rights Committee comprises members from Zila Parishad, besides officials of the district administration. In December, the House of Zila Parishad had passed three names for the purpose. However, when the notification was issued by the office of Governor regarding this, the names recommended by the House were not included in the committee.”

“Moreover in this committee, the names of BJP-supported elected members of Zila Parishad are included. Two members are from Spiti, while one is from Udaipur tehsil. There is no member from Lahaul tehsil, which has a big population as compared to other tehsils of the district,” she said.
