KULLU, JULY 25

A flash flood caused by a heavy rainfall in Serai Nullah damaged temporary wooden footbridges, a few vacant kiosks and an allegedly unauthorised under-construction restaurant on the banks of the river near Palchan in Manali sub-division of this district in the wee hours today.

The administration raised a high alert up to Bhuntar as the water level of the Beas increased abruptly. The people living along the banks of the river could not sleep during night due to the sudden rise in the water level.

SDM Surender Thakur said that as soon as he received information about flooding in the nullah, he sent fire brigade and police vehicles to alert the people. He said that two temporary wooden footbridges between Goshal and Bahang and one at Solang village were washed away due to the flood. Two vacant kiosks and an unauthorized under-construction restaurant were also washed away. There was no loss of life or livestock.

He said an advisory had been issued to avoid unnecessary travel during the alerts issued by the MeT Department. Meanwhile, Beas Nullah near Rohtang and Seri Nullah near Atal Tunnel were also in spate. However, no major losses were reported due to the heavy rain.

Normal life has been disturbed due to rain in the Lahaul valley. Heavy rain caused flooding in Teling Nullah due to which the Manali-Leh road remained closed for about five hours.

The 38 Border Road Task Force (BRTF) Commander Colonel Shabarish Vachali said that the flood occurred around 5 am blocking the road. It was thrown open after five hours by removing the debris.
