ED raids meant to scare Opposition leaders: Pratibha Singh

Congress president Pratibha Singh today criticised raids by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) at the offices of National Herald newspaper owned by the party.

“The Central Government is misusing probe agencies. It has set a new tradition of political oppression, which is a big threat to democracy in the country,” she said in a statement issued here. She added that after Independence, this was the first government that was trying to intimidate its political opponents.

Pratibha said that the country was facing serious challenges such as rising prices and unemployment. “The Indian rupee is getting weaker day by day but the BJP is trying to divert the attention of people by ordering investigation by the ED, Income Tax Department and the CBI to suppress the voice of the Opposition,” she alleged.

She said, “The debt burden of the state has crossed Rs 70,000 crore but Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur and his ministers are busy making announcements with an eye on the Assembly elections. The fact is that these are mere election gimmicks.”

She said that the government should not waste public money when it can’t even to pay salaries and financial benefits to its serving and retired employees.
