Dharamsala, June 22

In a letter to Himanta B. Sarma, Chief Minister of Assam, the Dalai Lama has expressed concern about unprecedented rainfall and flooding that had caused an extensive loss of life, devastation of property and displacement of millions of people over the past week in that state.

“It is most unfortunate that the monsoons in Assam and other parts of India wreak havoc year after year. I would like to express my sadness about the hardships caused to so many people in your state due to recent floods. I offer my deep condolences to you, to the families who have lost their loved ones, and to everyone affected by flooding,” he wrote.

The Dalai Lama said, “I appreciate the agencies concerned for doing everything to rescue those affected by floods and providing them with relief. As a mark of my solidarity with the people of Assam, I am making a donation from the Gaden Phodrang Trust of the Dalai Lama to support those efforts”.
