Cybercrime gang member arrested for Rs47-lakh fraud

The Palampur police have arrested a member of a cybercrime gang from New Delhi. Police sources said the accused had duped people of Rs 47 lakh.

The accused first came across the complainant on Facebook, got her mobile number, and later requested to transfer money under the pretext of custom clearance at an airport. The amount was transferred by the complainant. Later, the accused switched off his phone.

The victim, who is a resident of Sidhpur, Palampur, lodged a complaint with the police. Later, Kangra SP deputed a police team, headed by SHO Bhupinder Singh, which succeeded in arresting Rojam Liyana from Kishangarh, Delhi, who is allegedly a member of an international gang of cyber criminals.

Amit Sharma, DSP, Palampur, said the accused was a resident of Manipur and had admitted that he had links with cyber criminals in Nigeria. The police produced him in a local court, which remanded him to five-day police custody. — OC
