Cyber crime on rise, says Shimla SP

There has been a spurt in cyber crime. There have been many instances where suspects have morphed photos of women to defame them and the victims are not aware, said SP (law and order) Khushal Sharma here today

The banking frauds had also increased manifold with fraudsters targeting innocent citizens in the name of re-activation of their debit and credit cards, online bookings, free Covid test, job abroad, winning lotteries, zero per cent interest loans, revival of insurance policies, installation of mobile towers, free recharges and more, he said.

Recently, a person in Nurpur was duped of Rs 39.65 lakh. It was a high order crime in which criminals elicited information from bank, he added.

The Police Department was carrying out awareness programmes about cyber frauds. During the recent Vidhan Sabha Assurances Committee meeting, attended by the DGP and the Additional Chief Secretary (Home), members stressed the need to create awareness among masses to prevent cyber crime.

Every citizen needed to be educated through information, education and communication not to fall in the trap. The key to prevent cyber crime was to have effective and consistent cyber awareness, he said.
