Cops deployed in Atal Rohtang Tunnel to check traffic violations

The police have deployed as many as 30 officers and started a helpline 8219681600 to check traffic-related incidents at Atal Tunnel, Rohtang.

A large number of vehicles of tourists and locals were witnessed after the tunnel was thrown open to traffic on October 3. There were reports of overspeeding and a minor accident of three vehicles inside the tunnel. Gaurav Singh, SP, Kullu, said the police would keep vigil inside the tunnel and in the area from Palchan to the south portal of the tunnel to ensure the safety of people.

The SP said it was forbidden to stop the vehicle without any reason inside the tunnel and a case would be registered against the violators. He said the speed limit had been specified inside the tunnel and challans would be issued for overspeeding. Doppler radars have been placed inside the tunnel.

Kullu and Lahaul-Spiti police have deployed their personnel in the tunnel’s control room. Overspeeding will be monitored by the cameras and the violators will be alerted through the public address system for other violations.

The police personnel equipped with motorcycles have been deployed inside the tunnel. A round-the-clock naka has been put up at Palchan.

The SP said the dedicated cellphone number would serve as an important channel for the public to provide information about traffic accidents and violations.
