Shimla, April 20

The Public Works Department (PWD) has sought permission from the government for creating yellow line parking slots on the busy Cart Road.

The Municipal Corporation is planning to float tenders and auction yellow line parking slots on its roads in the next few days. Under the initiative, a yellow line will be drawn along the road where there’s a possibility of parking vehicles without disrupting the flow of traffic. The move will create a total of around 2,000 parking slots on MC roads and Cart Road.

“We have recommended the case to the government. The PWD has no objection to it and the MC can auction the parking space on the Cart Road like it’s doing in its roads,” said PWD Superintending Engineer. “If the government clearance comes, we will allow it on Cart Road and the Sanjauli-Dhalli bypass. On these two roads, parking slots between 500 and 600 are likely to be created,” said PWD SE.

The MC will float tenders for their road in the next few days. “We are almost ready to float the tenders, we will hopefully do it in a week’s time,” said MC Commissioner Ashish Kohli. The MC is planning to divide its roads in four zones for auction purpose and has fixed maximum charges that the contractor can charge per month from the people.

“We have capped the charges at Rs 800 plus GST per month. The contractor can’t charge more than this amount from the people,” said Kohli. The MC has identified 1,342 slots for yellow line parking on its roads. “The availability of the parking slots will provide major relief to the people in the city. Also, it will help regulate the traffic better,” he said.

Apart from these yellow line parking slots, a few big parking lots are at various stages of construction in the city. The major among them are the ones being constructed at the IGMC and another at Vikas Nagar. In a city where finding a vacant parking slot is a big challenge, the yellow line slots and the under-construction parking lots will provide a major relief to the residents as well as the tourist once they become operational.
