Una, January 28

Residents of Ambota village in Amb subdivision of the district today staged a protest along with the body of a youth, who had died after his motorcycle hit a tipper parked on the roadside. The protesters raised slogans against the local police.

The villagers, along with Sanjay Kumar’s body in a pickup truck, gathered at the Gagret Chowk here and blocked the Hoshiarpur to Amb highway, besides the Una to Daulatpur Chowk road for about one and a half hour.

Sanjay Kumar, a resident of Ambota village, was riding the motorcycle bearing registration number HP19D 0244 when it hit a tipper bearing registration number PB08 1237 parked on the roadside last night. He reportedly died on the spot. The body was taken to the Una district hospital for a post-mortem examination, after which it was handed over to the bereaved family members today.

From the hospital, Sanjay’s family members and other villagers brought the body to the Gagret Chowk and staged a protest there. They said that the tipper was lying wrongly parked on the roadside for the past many days, giving rise to the chances of accidents. They added that the matter had been reported to the police but they did not remove the tipper.

Amb SDM Vinay Modi and DSP Manoj Jamwal tried to pacify the protesters, who were demanding the immediate arrest of the owner of the tipper. Traffic was finally restored after Additional Deputy Commissioner Arindam Chaudhary and ASP Vinod Dhiman assured the protesters of criminal proceedings against the owner of the tipper, besides financial assistance to next of kin of the deceased.
