Punjab and Himachal Pradesh are on the verge of joining the club of states, including Haryana, to provide hundred per cent coverage under the ‘Har Ghar Jal’ programme of Centre’s flagship Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM).

The data prepared by Jal Shakti Ministry states that while Punjab has achieved 99 per cent coverage, Himachal Pradesh has crossed the 92 per cent mark.

Besides Haryana, every rural household has been provided with tapped water supply in Telangana, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Puducherry, Dadar & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu.

The mission, which aims to provide piped-water to every rural household in the country by 2024, is implemented by the Union Jal Shakti Ministry in coordination with the states.

The Ministry said that the Jal Jeevan Mission has provided tapped water supply to more than 5.77 crore rural households across the country. As a result, nine crore rural households are enjoying benefits of clean tap water at present.

At the announcement of the mission on August 15, 2019, out of 19.27 crore households, only 3.23 crore (17%) had tap water connections.

Since the announcement of the mission, 98 districts, 1,129 blocks, 66,067 gram panchayats and 1,36,135 villages have been covered under ‘Har Ghar Jal’ programme.
