Shimla, September 28

A private university in the state has reportedly showed reluctance in refunding the security deposit and deducted 10 per cent of the amount in the name of maintenance charges.

Some students of Indus International University, Una, had complained to the Himachal Pradesh Private Educational Institutions Regulatory Commission (HPPEIRC) that their security amount was not being refunded. The commission directed the university to release their security deposits. The institution refunded the security but deducted Rs 1,100 as “maintenance and other charges”.

A former student of the university, Rahul Rayat said the university had deducted Rs 1,100 in the name of maintenance charges and convocation fee. More than 3,000 student have passed out from the institution, implying that about Rs 30 lakh had been collected and this amount should be refunded to the students, he added.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university has been called for a hearing on September 30 and the issue would be taken up then, he added. — TNS
