Ambala, August 7

Following continuous delay in the implementation of the civil airport project in Ambala Cantonment, the Haryana Home and Health Minister Anil Vij has sought time from the Defence Minister and Civil Aviation Minister for meetings to take up the pending project.

Hanging fire for two years

The civil airport project was approved in December 2018 by the Centre, but it has been hanging fire. For more than two years, the project remained stuck as the land for the project was not finalised. Anil Vij

The Haryana minister has sent letters to both ministers for meetings.

Speaking to The Tribune, Home Minister Vij said he would meet Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia and seek a high-power meeting of the officials concerned, adding that everything got finalised and the plan was chalked out, but the project was getting delayed due to unknown reasons. “I will take up the matter with both ministers, for which I have sent letters to them for meetings in Delhi,” Vij added.

In December 2018, the civil airport project was approved, under the Udan 3.0 scheme by the Central government, but the project has been hanging fire. Initially, for more than two years the project remained stuck as the land for the project was not finalised.

In 2019, even the routes of Srinagar and Lucknow were awarded to Zoom Air by the Ministry of Civil Aviation and it was expected that a route of Delhi would also be awarded. The Indian Air Force (IAF) runway was to be used for the airport. Last year, the district administration and the IAF authorities agreed to construct the airport on the defence land in Ambala Cantonment.

Deputy Commissioner Vikram Singh said, “A joint survey was conducted with the departments concerned. After coordinating with the CEO, Chandigarh Airport International Limited, the operational plan was sent to the Airports Authority of India.”
