Hisar, January 11

With a ranking of 194, Hisar has slipped to the worst position in the last five years in Swachh Survekshan. Hisar was ranked 200 in 2017 and improved its rankings to 146 the next year.

Hisar — the hometown of the state Urban and Local Bodies Department (ULB), Dr Kamal Gupta, who is the local BJP MLA — has nosedived from the 115th national position last year to 194 this year. The town has bagged the seventh position in the state.

Will review situation

Due to technical reasons, our cities could not get the desired rankings. We will review the situation and put our best foot forward to get better rankings next year. —Kamal Gupta, Urban Local Bodies Minister

Dr Gupta, who was inducted into the Khattar Cabinet in 2021, claimed to focus on the cleanliness and sanitation of the town to uplift it to the level of Indore, which has been ranked first for years.

The poor civic conditions of Hisar have been a major inconvenience for residents throughout the year. They have been complaining about heaps of garbage dumps in residential areas and marketplaces.

The lack of cleanliness was also blamed for the spread of dengue and other vector-borne diseases in October. Even though the MC claimed to collect door-to-door garbage, residents in the PLA market area and several localities complained about garbage scattered in the open and along the roadside. Choking of sewerage is another major problem in the town.

The outgoing mayor, Gautam Sardana, who completed his term two days ago, said they had tried hard to ensure cleanliness. “We floated tenders for door-to-door garbage collection and work is going on to set up a processing plant. We hope that the town will improve its ranking next year,” he added.
