Two held for fraud

A team of the Karnal cyber crime police station has arrested two persons for allegedly cheating people on the pretext of winning a prize.

The arrested accused allegedly talked to their intended targets in female voice. The police have seized Rs 69,000 in cash, two mobile phones and a laptop from their possession. They used to create digital accounts of their victims to convince them that they had won a prize.

The accused have been identified as Satinder Kumar of Ghaziabad and Balkishan of Noida. They were arrested on August 1 and were taken on four-day police remand.

A case has been registered against them under Sections 419, 420, 467, 471 and 120-B of the IPC.

Parveen Kumar of Shiv Colony reportedly told the police that he received a phone call some days ago and the caller introduced herself as Pooja Sharma. She told Kumar, a bank employee, that she was an officer in the Aadhaar card department of the Government of India.

She told him that he had won a prize of Rs 12 lakh on his Aadhaar number. To claim that prize, he would have to complete some formalities, he was told.

To establish her identity, the woman sent an identity card and other documents to the complainant. She reportedly convinced him to transfer Rs 1.29 lakh into the account numbers shared by her.

The complainant said he had shared his Aadhaar number, PAN, bank details and other documents with the accused.
