To dispel fears, PM mentions Sonepat farmer

In his “Mann Ki Baat” talk, PM Narendra Modi cited the example of a Sonepat farmer to dispel doubts about the new farm laws.

Kanwar Chauhan began to make more money after vegetables and fruits were excluded from the APMC. He and other farmers formed a producers’ organisation … They are earning up to Rs 3 lakh per acre annually.

The PM talked of how Kanwar Chauhan of Sonepat and other farmers benefited after fruits and vegetables were brought out of the Agricultural Produce Market Committee Act in 2014, allowing them to sell their produce outside government-controlled mandis.

Modi said Chauhan began to make more money after vegetables and fruits were excluded from the APMC. Chauhan and other farmers formed a producers’ organisation to cultivate sweet corn and baby corn and supplied directly to Delhi, retail chains and five-star hotels. The farmers of the village were earning up to Rs 3 lakh per acre annually. — TNS
