Gurugram, February 18

Taking a strong stance against slapping of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act [UAPA] on the Nuh riots’ accused, district MLA and Congress leader Aftab Ahmed has demanded that the Imam’s murder accused in Gurugram should also be slapped with the same.

As an aftermath of riots on July 31, a group of right wing activists barged into a local mosque in Gurugram and murdered the Imam.

Ahmed, while speaking to The Tribune, said, “If they call it justice, then it should be free from discrimination. If one murder accused in the riots is being stamped terrorist, then why not others? They razed homes in Nuh, but what about Gurugram? Why were the homes of those who killed Imam or threatened migrants razed? The Khattar government covered up its failure on law and order with bulldozers.”

The UAPA has been added to three FIRs registered so far, but highly placed sources say there is more to come.

A senior police official said few FIRs in Nagina police station too were under consideration and this had left Congress MLA Maman Khan’s supporters in jittery, who suspect he, too, may have to face it. Khan was booked for instigating clashes in the Nagina area and is currently out on bail.

“The CM needs to explain why the UAPA was not there in the initial FIR and now being added in challans being presented in the court. Which investigation has proved that these men are terrorists?,” Ahmed said.

Meanwhile, families of the accused in over 50 FIRs registered during the riots are terrified. “My son had just gone with his friends and did nothing. He was picked up from home and before we could know, they said he was involved in the murder. Had he been involved, why would he wait for the police sitting at home? I had to sell my wife’s jewellery to pay legal fee and now they are saying he is a terrorist. We are shocked,” said father of one of the accused in Bajrang Dal member Abhishek’s murder.
