Hisar, July 28

The government schools are the worst affected due to waterlogging during the monsoon season in most villages of the district. The school authorities have decided to close these schools until water is drained out.

Don’t have numbers

Complaints of waterlogging in some schools have been received. We have urged panchayat secretaries of respective villages to take steps to drain water from schools. I don't have the exact number of such schools. — Kuldeep Sihag, District Education Officer

Several villages in Hansi, Narnaund and Hisar subdivisions are facing a flood-like situation since the recent spell of rain. Apart from the inundation of crops, premises of government schools in several villages have become waterlogged.

Reports say the government school at Mirchpur village and the government girls’ school at Ghiray are waterlogged. The Mirchpur school authorities have closed the school till the stagnant water is drained out.

Around 100 government schools in the district have “unsafe” rooms, sources say. As the school authorities avoid holding classes in such rooms, they face space crunch and have to adjust students of two-three classes in one room.

Sunil Gill of Ghiray village said the school and veterinary hospital here had been waterlogged for the past some days. “Though pumps have been installed in the village to drain out water, power cuts hamper such efforts,” he said.

District Education Officer Kuldeep Sihag said they had received complaints of waterlogging in some schools. “We have urged the panchayat secretaries of respective villages to take steps to drain out water from schools. I don’t have the exact number of such schools,” he said. “The school authorities are directed not to hold classes in unsafe rooms,” he added.
