Chandigarh, July 29

The Cabinet today deferred the agenda item of the conversion of the sepcial economic zones (SEZs) to cyber parks.

This is the second time the issue has been deferred. On July 21, Home Minister Anil Vij had objected to it. Today too, a couple of ministers had reservations in this regard.

One of them pointed out that the Centre was bringing the legislation, while the other said the Industries Department was not consulted.

The proposal was being brought by the Town and Country Planning Department. The Centre was also bringing the Development of Enterprise and Service Hubs Bill in Parliament for overhauling of the SEZ Act of 2005 in the country. In her Budget speech, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had said the new legislation would allow states to collaborate in the development.
