Proactive strategy against drug peddlers need of the hour: Haryana CM

At the regional conference on drug trafficking and national security, Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar today said drug addiction and trafficking were a matter of concern.

“This problem is not limited to any one country. The world is fighting against this societal evil,” the CM said.

Police of all states should act together

The Chief Minister said due to various reasons, our youth and but children were falling prey to substance abuse.

“If the police force of one state takes strict action against peddlers, those involved in illegal trafficking shift their bases to neighbouring states. The network of drug dealers is spread all over the country. Law enforcement agencies of various states are putting up a tough fight to break this network. However, this problem can be curbed if the law enforcement agencies work with mutual coordination,” said the Chief Minister.

The CM said according to the decisions taken in the earlier conferences on the issue of drug smuggling and national security, Haryana had not only taken effective steps, but the decisions were showing results.

“More than 200 cases under the NDPS Act are registered in the state every month. Till June 30, 1,913 cases were registered, in which 2,661 accused have been arrested. Till June 2022, around Rs 32 crore have been recovered from 253 smugglers. The process to attach property worth Rs 13 crore is also in progress,” said Khattar.

Khattar added that the Haryana Police had been directed to thoroughly investigate every case and tighten the noose around those involved in illicit trade.

“As a result of the implementation of tough decisions, the Haryana Police have succeeded in nabbing drug smugglers even from remote areas of Telangana, Odisha and Madhya Pradesh.

In his concluding remarks, the Chief Minister said under the NDPS Act, 142 drug de-addiction centres had been opened in the state. “Besides, mental health and drug de-addiction wards have been opened in all government medical colleges. De-addiction centres are also being opened in civil hospitals in every district of the state. So far, these centres have been opened in 13 districts,” he added.
