Kurukshetra, July 19

A pall of gloom descended on Sector 4 in Kurukshetra as the news of the killing of the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Surender Maanjhu reached here on Tuesday.

People from various walks of life reached his house to express their grief over the incident.

The officer is survived by his wife and two children. While his daughter works in a bank in Bangalore, his son is in Canada.

Was honest officer

I knew Surender for almost 25 years. He was an honest officer. I am deeply shocked. I met his family as soon as I got the news. The mining mafia has no humanity left. Dhuman Singh Kirmach, vice-chairman, Haryana Sarasvati Heritage Development Board

Senior police officials also reached the DSP’s house to help the family, and were seen consoling the family. After getting the news of the death, the DSP’s wife and family members left Kurukshetra.

Residents of Sector 4 remembered Surender Maanjhu as a polite and sincere person. The neighbours said they were shocked to hear the news and sought strict action against the mining mafia.

DSP’s younger brother Ashok, who is an officer in a Cooperative Bank, got emotional while speaking about his brother, and said, “He never said no to me for anything. He was about to retire. He was very punctual and serious about his duty. Recently he came on leave and told me that he might not come home this week due to duty. We used to talk regularly and even this morning we spoke, but I never thought that this would happen.”

As per a police spokesman, before joining the Police Department, Surender used to work as a veterinary and livestock development assistant (VLDA). In the year 1994, Surender joined the police as an assistant sub-inspector (ASI), remained posted in Kurukshetra on various positions and got promoted. He remained in charge of the CIA, security branch, Ladwa police station and Babain police station. He was also posted as DSP Shahabad from August 17, 2019, to June 23, 2020. Presently, he was posted in Nuh.

His final rites will be performed at his native village Sarangpur in Hisar.
