Kurukshetra, March 5

The contingent from Kurukshetra University secured 20 medals at the Khelo India University Games (KIUG)-2023 held in Assam and other northeastern states from February 18 to 29.

The contingent comprised 130 players and 26 support staff members.

However, the university’s overall rank slipped to 15 this year from the previous ranking of 6th in the games.

A KU official said, “In the Khelo India University Games, our athletes showcased exceptional talent and determination in various disciplines by securing 20 medals (four gold and eight silver and bronze medals each).

The top-performing teams from the university were of shooting, with two gold and silver medals each, followed by weightlifting (one gold and silver each, and two bronze), boxing (two silver and bronze medals each), and athletics (one silver and two bronze).

The achievements of the teams of volleyball (bronze medal), wrestling (silver medal), judo (gold medal), and fencing (bronze medal) added significant contribution to the university’s medal collection.

KU Sports Director Rajesh Sobti highlighted the factors behind the fall in the university’s ranking, emphasising that the private universities get sufficient financial support.

He said the absence of rowing, a discipline in which KU traditionally excelled, impacted the university’s overall performance.

“As we reflect on our performance at the KIUG-2023, we remain committed to nurturing and supporting our athletes, and providing them with the resources and encouragement they need to excel in their chosen sports”, he added.

KU Vice-Chancellor Prof Som Nath Sachdeva and Registrar Prof Sanjeev Sharma congratulated all players, coaches, and support staff for their relentless efforts and dedication. They expressed their confidence in the abilities of their athletes and encouraged them to continue striving for excellence.
