Karnal, February 21

A total of 18 doctors were recruited to the Kalpana Chawla Government Medical College (KCGMC) in January, of which 10 of them have joined the institute so far.

The KCGMC, that witnesses around 2,000 OPD patients daily, has been facing shortage of doctors for the past several months. The Medical Council of India (MCI) had pointed out a deficiency of 18.6 per cent of doctors during its visit on September 26 and 27 last year.

The hospital had started the process of recruitment in a phased manner. It called applications for 82 vacant posts and it received 703 applications. In the first phase of recruitment, conducted in January, it recruited 18 doctors out of 58 applicants.

In the first phase of recruitment, three, two and five doctors have been recruited to major departments, including general surgery, obstetrics-gynaecology and general medicine respectively. Besides, two doctors have been recruited in physiology, one each in psychiatry, radiology, dermatology, neurology and cardiology.

The college will get super specialist doctors for the first time as the doctors recruited for nephrology, neurosurgery and cardiology are yet to join. After the joining of these doctors, the trio departments will be functional.
