Helping hand by varsity alumni

Sonepat: Alumni of OP Jindal Global University (JGU) have been doing yeoman’s service to society by helping those impacted by Covid. The JGU alumni Covid fund is operational since early June. So far, 4,014 people have been provided with travel, ration and medical assistance in collaboration with several NGOs and civil society organisations and individuals working on the ground. The alumni settled across the globe have digitally connected to run their philanthropic activities. “The pandemic has affected millions of people across the country. Migrant workers and other marginalised communities have taken a hit due to loss in employment, travel ban, inability to buy ration and lack of sanitation and shelter. The JGU alumni, with the support of volunteers, have initiated a fundraiser to provide for basic needs of the underprivileged. We believe that every human being has the right to life with dignity. We are working with civil society organisations, NGOs, social networks and individuals to ensure that funds get distributed efficiently to the right set of people. We provide a platform where people with limited free time can help us with ongoing projects of reliable NGOs as per availability. We have currently provided assistance with travel, food, clothing, sanitation and medical requirements. We in collaboration with Migrant Travel Support Network, Migrant Travel Support, Jeevan Rath and Sonu Sood’s team have arranged transportation for migrants from Delhi and Mumbai to Bihar. We are working on travel assistance for migrants from Maharastra and Tamil Nadu to different parts of the country,” says Anjali Chawla, pursuing LLM course in Sweden.

Special drive commences

Sonepat: For the protection of girls and the environment, a special campaign — “Meri Beti, Meri Pehchan” — has been launched in the district to get houses named after daughters and plant a sapling. Launching the campaign from his house by fixing the nameplate of his daughter Hitashri, Deputy Commissioner Shyam Lal Punia has said the campaign will reach the doorstep of families of 10,092 girls identified in the under-one-year age group in the district. The Women and Child Development Department in the district will be given more than 15,200 plants, which will be planted in houses of identified girls within a week.

Anti-drug cycle rally organised

Kaithal: The district police held a cycle rally on Friday on the occasion of the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. DSP (HQ) Kulwant Singh and Pundri DSP Krishan Kumar led the rally. Doctors, sportspersons and sports coaches participated in the event to spread awareness about drugs among the people. They wore masks, followed social distancing norms and carried placards.
