Golf Course Extension road unsafe for pedestrians, footpaths missing

An inspection of the Golf Course Extension road by Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) Principal Adviser of Urban Development and former Chief Secretary DS Dhesi has found that the road between Vatika Chowk to Ghata is ‘risky’ for pedestrians.

In a letter to GMDA CEO, Dhesi said that in the absence of footpaths, pedestrians were forced to walk on stormwater drains, which were uncovered at many points.

Numerous potholes

“I inspected the road from Vatika Chowk to Ghata village and found footpaths to be missing and due to heavy traffic on the road, people walk on parallel drains. The slabs meant to cover drains are missing in majority of points which can be fatal as people may fall in. We need to get slabs to cover drains as soon as possible,” the letter read.

The Golf Course Extension road is among the most broken roads in the city and has numerous deep potholes, leading to accidents. The GMDA had issued a tender worth Rs 7 crore to a company last year for the maintenance of the road but work is yet to begin, even as thousands of people commuting on it daily continue to suffer.

Repair work to start after weather improves

The work for maintenance of the road has been handed over to a company. Due to prevailing cold weather, the work has not been started but once it improves, the work will be started and the drains cleaned. “Commuting on the road has become a matter of life and death. Access to good roads is the right of every citizen but it is shocking that despite repeated promises, important roads like this one continue to be in this condition,” said Praveen Malik, president, United Association of New Gurugram.

Guidelines have been issued to the Executive Engineer in this regard,” said GMDA Chief Engineer Arun Dhankhar.
