Downpour brings Gurugram traffic to a standstill

Torrential rains this morning in Gurugram led to massive waterlogging and power failure. Several parts of the city including National Highway 48 were affected. People were also stranded in several areas due to the downpour.

Key issues identified

This was a trial run for us. We have identified the key issues and will start working right away to ensure we are prepared for the monsoons. I have directed all agencies concerned to immediately deal with the identified problems. Nishant Yadav, dc, gurugram

Areas worst affected by waterlogging and congestion were Narsinghpur area, Jharsa Crossing, Sector 29, Sector 38, Sector 50, Rajeev Chowk, Sheetla Mata Road, Civil Lines, Golf Course Extension Road, Vatika Chowk, Sector 52 and Daultabad Flyover.

While the civic authorities failed in its virtual trial run for the forthcoming monsoon the Gurugram police saved the day. The cops were seen on foot and bicycles trying not only to manage traffic but also removing uprooted trees, repairing damaged vehicles, helping stranded commuters towing away vehicles and even helping people to drain out water from their homes and societies.

Ravinder Kumar Tomar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (traffic), said being Monday morning the traffic was heavy, but 2,500 cops came to the rescue of the people.

The police control room started receiving calls from 6.30 am. The police said 25 police control room vehicles, 40 individual riders, 10 tow trucks, five earthmovers and over 100 police station vehicles had been sent to the rain-affected areas. Police teams deployed at the Integrated Command Centre, set up by the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority coordinated with the cops on ground. Nishant Yadav, DC, Gurugram, ordered work from home to reduce load on roads and help civic authorities fix issues. Power cuts were reported across the city with many areas such as Sector 10, New Gurugram and Golf Course Road.
