Despite NGT order, Gurugram’s Udyog Vihar remains a mess

Even as the National Green Tribunal (NGT) recently asked the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) to curb the dumping of garbage on the roadsides and in vacant plots of Udyog Vihar, one can see heaps of garbage at many locations in the industrial area.

On January 23, the MCG had submitted before the tribunal that the site in Udyog Vihar mentioned in a case matter had been cleaned and that a secondary collection point had been discontinued with immediate effect from the spot.

After accepting the reply, the NGT had directed the civic body to file a fresh report before the Registrar General of the NGT, entailing the extent of recovery made in a period of three months.

The Udyog Vihar area houses several corporate offices and thousands of people from Delhi-NCR come here for work. People working in the area say they are unable to park their vehicles due to the dumping of garbage at many places. Rahul Kumar, who works at a bank in Udyog Vihar, said the entire area was emanating a nauseating stench.

“The MCG must take concrete steps to clear the garbage and ensure that no one dumps waste on the roadsides,” Lalit Gulati, a resident who had filed the petition before the NGT, said.

When The Tribune visited the Phase-4 area of Udyog Vihar, garbage was found dumped opposite plot number 26A and at several other locations.

As per the details available from the MCG, a private company, Ecogreen Energy, was hired for lifting waste, but it had stopped working for the past couple of weeks. The MCG has now scrapped work contract with the company.

Although alternative arrangements have been made for waste collection, unidentified persons had dumped waste at some places.

On January 20, the MCG had informed the NGT that the secondary collection point had been discontinued and the site had been cleaned. Regular monitoring of the entire area is being done to ensure collection and transportation of waste to designated sites at Bandhwari village.
