Court restrains mining activity

Show comments

Chandigarh, July 14

Less than two months after the Punjab and Haryana High Court ordered demarcation of areas for mining in Panipat district along the Uttar Pradesh border, a Division Bench today restrained five contractors from carrying out mining in the land denoted in the demarcation report.

The Bench of Justice Rajiv Sharma and Justice Harinder Singh Sidhu directed the Panipat DC to ensure compliance. “The respondents are restrained from undertaking any mining activity in the land denoted in the demarcation report dated June 9 till further orders,” the Bench noted. The direction came after the Bench was told that private respondents were still continuing with illegal mining despite the demarcation report. The case has its genesis in another petition filed by Karambir Singh and other cultivators of land in Kundla village in Bapoli tehsil of Panipat district. — TNS
