Kurukshetra, January 12

Congress leader Randeep Surjewala today accused the BJP government of exploiting farmers. He said the government should reduce urea bag prices as it had reduced its weight to 40 kg.

Cut urea bag price

The government reduced the weight of the urea bag by 5 kg in the name of neem-coated urea and now it has further reduced the weight by another 5 kg in the name of sulphur-coated urea gold, but the price of the bag has been kept unchanged at Rs 266.50 per bag. — Randeep Surjewala, Congress leader

Talking to mediapersons after addressing a party workers’ meeting here, Surjewala said, “The government has found new ways to exploit farmers. Earlier, it reduced the weight of the urea bag by 5 kg in the name of neem-coated urea and now it has further reduced the weight by another 5 kg in the name of sulphur-coated urea gold, but the price of the bag has been kept unchanged at Rs 266.50 per bag.”

“Over the past nine years, the weight of urea bags has decreased from 50 kg to 40 kg, but the price is kept unchanged. It is the new way of increasing prices. The government has no valid justification and if the same thing continues, the weight will be further reduced and prices will remain the same. It will become difficult for farmers and farm labourers to survive. We demand if the bag contains 40 kg urea, the price should also be charged for 40 kg only, instead of 50 kg,” he said.
