Rohtak, August 7

Residents of Mayna, village of pugilist Amit Panghal, broke into celebrations as soon as their co-villager clinched the gold medal by trouncing England’s Kiaran MacDonald in Birmingham Commonwealth Games on Sunday.

They not only danced to celebrate the moment, but also reached Amit’s home to congratulate his family members and distributed sweets.

Amit’s mother Usha Rani, along with other female family members, sang folk songs and also danced on these to express their happiness.

Men and women watched the final bout on two screens at Amit’s home. A majority of the men were carrying the Tricolour in their hands.

“Before leaving for Birmingham, Amit had promised me to win gold and he fulfilled his promise by changing the colour of the medal in Birmingham. He won a silver medal in the previous Commonwealth Games. This time, he toiled hard to improve his performance. My son is fond of kheer and churma. I will prepare the dishes for him on his return,” his mother said.

Amit’s father, Vijender Singh, who is a farmer, said since Amit won his last three bouts by 5-0 in the Commonwealth Games, hence he wanted the final bout victory with the same score and Amit did it.
