2 apps launched as NDRI turns 100

Union agri minister exhorts scientists to expedite research work

Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Narendra Singh Tomar here today inaugurated year-long programmes of the ICAR-NDRI on the completion of 100 years of the premier dairy institute of the country.

He dedicated a pillar, depicting the history of the NDRI, and also an “oxygen park” on the occasion. He launched an app “Mahishi Mitra” which will help detect heat among animals with the help of saliva drop. When the drop of saliva of animal will be taken as a photograph, the app will tell whether the animal is in heat or not. The minister also inaugurated another app for climate-related advisory.

Addressing the scientists during the centenary anniversary programme (100 years’ of excellence in dairy science), the Tomar exhorted them to expedite the research work. “The NDRI has completed 100 years and it has done tremendous work, but still a lot needs to be done,” said Tomar.

The Union Minister also appealed to scientists to adopt 100 villages of the district under the “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav” programme to promote dairy farming.

He said dairy farming played a vital role in ecomony and would help in doubling farmers’ income. He also urged scientists to focus on enhancing the milk quality.

NDRI Director, Dr Manmohan Singh Chauhan, highlighted the achievements of the institution. He said several programmes would be organised during this year.

On being asked about the allegations levelled by the SKM that the Union Government did not form any committee for the MSP, Union Minister Tomar said the government was ready to form the committee to review the implementation of the guaranteed MSP on the crop, but the SKM had not submitted the names. “We have not received names for the SKM for the committee,” he added.

Shifted to Karnal in 1955

  • NDRI was established on July 1, 1923, in Bangalore.
  • It was shifted to Karnal in 1955 and later made a deemed university in 1989.
  • In 100 years, the institute has achieved various goals in the field of dairy research, education and extension.
