Fraud case: 1-yr jail for couple

Hoshiarpur: The Court of CJM Amit Malhan convicted a couple, Amrik Singh and Rajni Devi, of cheating and sentenced them to 1-year imprisonment and imposed a fine of 5,000 in cash on each of them. In case of failure to pay the fine the accused will have to undergo an additional imprisonment of 10 days. The Chabbewal police had registered a case of cheating to the tune of Rs 9 lakh against the couple on December 15, 2015 on the complaint of Lashkar Ram, a resident of Rupowal village. OC

Revise pay scales, demand Bankers

Phagwara: On a call given by the Punjab Bank Employees Association, its members staged a demonstration in front of the State Bank of India at Hargobind Nagar here on Monday. Employees from all associate banks and Punjab Bank Employees’ Federation participated in the protest and raised slogans against the discriminatory attitude of the SBI management demanding de-linking of associate banks from the State Bank of India. Narinder Singh, zonal secretary, Punjab Employees’ Federation, said: “All workers of the associate banks will hold a two-day strike on January 31 and February 1 in case their demands were not met.” The major demands of the protesters include revision of pay scales. They were also opposing the proposed merger of banks. OC

Woman run over by train

Phagwara: One unidentified woman was run over by a running train at the Mauli railway crossing between Phagwara and Goraya. The victim was sent to a hospital in Jalandhar but could not survive, said Government Railway Police (GRP) in-charge Gurbheij Singh. The GRP have kept the body in mortuary for identification after autopsy, which was conducted at the Civil Hospital. A case has been registered. OC
