Four days later, police register Gargi College molestation case

New Delhi, February 10

The Delhi Police on Monday registered a case in the alleged mass molestation incident at Gargi College here following complaints that students attending the college festival ‘Reverie’ were physically abused on February 6 by unidentified gatecrashers.

A case under sections of the Indian Penal Code relating to trespass, insult to the modesty of woman and a criminal act done by several people was registered at Hauz Khas Police station.

“Acting on a complaint received from the college authorities, we have registered a case. Additional DCP (South) Gitanjali Khandelwal is also conducting a detailed inquiry into the matter,” said DCP (South) Atul Kumar Thakur.

Meanwhile, the Delhi Commission for Women issued summons to the authorities of Gargi College and the Delhi Police after their members visited the campus and met students, who stated that police personnel were present on the campus during the incident but did not take any action against the harassers.

DCW chief Swati Maliwal said: “It is a very shameful incident. Both the police and the college administration were present on the spot when the incident took place, but no seriousness was shown from either side.”

The college authorities will appear before the commission on February 13. — TNS
