While there have been several theatrical release date announcements in the past few weeks, OTT is also not behind. Giving a pleasant surprise to all OTT fans, Netflix announces as many as 40 new titles which will be out on the streaming giant in 2021.

The upcoming line-up on Netflix features more variety and diversity than seen before. From the biggest films and series, to gripping documentaries and reality, and bold comedy formats, Netflix is all set to take a big leap in India this year.

Bollywood divas Madhuri Dixit and Raveena Tandon will be making their digital debut with Netflix web series. Madhuri will be seen in series Finding Anamika. As the police and loved ones search for answers to her disappearance, her perfectly crafted facade is stripped away.

Raveena Tandon will be seen as Kasturi, a cop in web series Aranyak. After a foreign teenage tourist disappears in the misty Himalayan town, the local cop Kasturi digs up skeletons and revives a forgotten Himalayan myth of a bloodthirsty, serial killer.

Even Sonakshi Sinha will also be making her digital debut with film Bulbul Tarang. Set in Kannauj, this film is about a chirpy young girl called Bulbul who has one simple dream - she wants her groom to come in his baraat atop a horse. On the other hand, Kapil Sharma is also set for OTT debut with a Comedy Special on Netflix.

Direct on OTT

Besides Kartik Aaryan’s Dhamaka and Neena Gupta starrer Sardar Ka Grandson, Netflix will have 11 more new films which will have a direct OTT release in 2021. Directed by Abbas-Mastan, Penthouse features Bobby Deol, Arjun Rampal and Sharman Joshi amongst others. The film is about architect Vikram Saxena who proposes sharing a Penthouse with his five married friends. Ajeeb Daastaans, starring Fatima Sana Shaikh, Jaideep Ahlawat, Armaan Ralhan and Nushrratt Bharucch, is an anthology of four contrasting stories which delves into fractured relationships.

With lead actors Taapsee Pannu and Vikrant Massey, Haseen Dillruba is about a woman whose heart longs to live like words captured in a novel, but finds herself entangled in the murder of her own husband. Meenakshi Sundareshwar will see Sanya Malhotra opposite Abhimanyu Dassani. The film is about the life of Meenakshi and Sundareshwar, who enter into an arranged marriage because their first names together make Madurai’s famous temple Meenakshi - Sundareshwar. Jagame Thandhiram stars Dhanush and the film tells the story of Suruli, a nomadic gangster who has to choose between good and evil.

Pagglait is another Sanya Malhotra release on Netflix. The film follows the story of recently widowed Sandhya struggling to mourn the death of her husband, as she sets out on the path of self-discovery. Other films which will have an OTT premiere this year include Jaadugar starring Jitendra Kumar and Arushi Sharma, Milestone starring Suvinder Vicky and Lakshvir Saran, Navarasa featuring veteran actress Revathy and The Disciple.

Sequels out to shine

Sequels of few hit web series are also lined-up for release on Netflix this year. These include Delhi Crime S2, Masaba Masaba S2, Jamtara - Sabka Number Ayega S2, She S2, Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives S2, Kota Factory S2, Little Things S4 and Mismatched S2.

Dig into the real sphere

There are few interesting documentaries and reality series which will be aired. The top ones include Crime Stories: India Detectives, House of Secrets: The Burari Deaths, Indian Predator and Searching for Sheela.

More the merrier

Known for his roles in web series Hostages and UnDekhi, Surya Sharma calls shooting for Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhein, one of the titles from Netflix’s upcoming marathon for binge watchers, a great journey and a learning experience. He adds, “I do not think there’s any concept of a big star or small actor when it comes to web series and original movies releasing in OTT. In other words, OTT is the main star which has created not only opportunities for all kinds of artistes but also smart audience that is able to distinguish between good and bad content. Movie stars are very much welcome. It will only enhance the reach of OTT platforms.”
