New Delhi, February 16

Two leaders of the Sikh community, Paramjit Singh Sarna and Manjit Singh GK, have reported that their official verified pages on the social media platform Facebook have been deactivated without any explanation. Both are former presidents of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee and are in the Sukhbir Badal-led SAD. Sarna heads the Delhi unit of the party.

GK said he has written a letter to Meta, the company that owns Facebook, regarding the deactivation of his official verified page. “Today, it has come to my attention that my official and verified Facebook page @manjitsinghgk has been abruptly shut down by Facebook, without providing any justification,” the letter said. “This action appears to be a blatant attempt to suppress my voice on matters pertaining to Punjab, Punjabi and Sikh issues,” he added.

“The sudden deactivation of the Facebook page not only infringes upon my freedom of speech but also undermines the democratic principles enshrined in our Constitution,” GK added, who has over 250,000 followers.

In his protest to Meta, Sarna stated, “Our page, which has been blue tick verified and has been in existence for a considerable period, plays a crucial role in connecting with our audience and disseminating important information. The sudden closure has left us confused, as we are unaware of any violations or reasons that could lead to such action.”
